Comedian Erick Omondi Arrested

Comedian Erick Omondi was arrested earlier today outside the Parliament premises in Nairobi, following a solitary protest against the contentious Finance Bill proposed by the Kenyan government. The bill, which has sparked widespread public concern due to its potential impact on taxation affecting the common citizen, received a significant majority approval of 204 votes from Members of Parliament.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing Omondi astride a horse, passionately chanting his opposition to the bill despite being in mourning for his late brother, Fred Omondi, who tragically passed away in a recent road accident.
“I have come for you to kill me like my brother who was killed. I have come to die if you pass it. Things will not be the same,” Omondi was quoted as saying during his protest. He specifically addressed Deputy President Dr. William Ruto, urging him not to sign the bill into law.
Authorities moved swiftly to disperse the gathering, citing unauthorized assembly, despite Omondi’s efforts to negotiate peacefully. He was subsequently detained by police, who escorted him to the nearest police station for questioning.
Throughout the ordeal, Omondi remained resolute in his stance, pledging to continue advocating for his beliefs despite the consequences.
The arrest has sparked a debate on social media, with many expressing solidarity with Omondi’s cause while questioning the handling of peaceful protests by authorities.
The Kenyan government has yet to issue an official statement regarding Omondi’s arrest or the status of the Finance Bill, which continues to be a focal point of public discourse nationwide.
