The eagerly anticipated trial of former Migori County Governor Okoth Obado and his four children, along with eleven others, commenced today after a brief adjournment for trial documentation.

The charges, centering on alleged misappropriation of public funds and conflict of interest, stem from lucrative contracts awarded during Obado’s tenure.

A total of 59 witnesses have been summoned to testify in the case, providing crucial evidence to substantiate claims against Obado and his co-accused. Investigations reveal that significant sums were channeled to Obado’s children and various family members through contracts awarded to different companies during fiscal years spanning 2013 to 2016.

Among the accused are Obado’s wife, Christine Akinyi Ochola, his brothers Joram Opala, Peter Odoyo, Oluoch Kwaga, his mother Peninah Auma, and several other relatives. The charges include conflict of interest, money laundering, conspiracy to commit economic crimes, and the acquisition of public funds.

Sources indicate that funds exceeding Ksh 300 million were allegedly funneled into bank accounts linked to Obado and his children. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has emphasized that these transactions serve as crucial evidence in establishing charges related to money laundering and fraudulent tender allocation.

The trial, set to unfold in the coming weeks, is expected to shed light on one of the most prominent corruption cases in recent Kenyan political history. Observers are keenly watching as the judiciary navigates through complex legal arguments and voluminous evidence to deliver justice in this high-profile matter.
