In a recent session, the Bomet County Assembly approved a KSh 9.7 billion budget for the 2024/2025 financial year, which includes a KSh 5 million allocation for hosting presidential visits.

This decision has drawn attention as such events are typically funded by the national government.

The allocated KSh 5 million is designated to cover expenses related to the President, First Lady, Deputy President, and Second Lady during official visits. The budget document justifying this allocation cites last year’s experiences, including a three-day visit from the Second Lady, which reportedly strained the county’s resources.

The finance document explains that the allocation is necessary due to the anticipated increase in high-profile visits related to the Chepalungu Forest reforestation project. The project’s prominence is expected to attract further presidential attention, hence the proposed KSh 1 million increase from the previous year’s KSh 4 million allocation.

This budget approval comes amidst President William Ruto’s recent directives aimed at reducing government expenditure on non-priority sectors. Despite these directives, the new budget includes notable expenditures, such as KSh 417.4 million for travel and accommodation for the executive branch, and KSh 98.1 million for the county assembly’s operational costs.

Additionally, the budget allocates KSh 15 million for new vehicles for the Deputy Governor’s office and provides increased funds for operating expenses and outreach programs.
