Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii has announced a bold vision to transform Uasin Gishu County into a leading destination for medical tourism.

Speaking during an impromptu visit to the Uasin Gishu County Hospital, Dr. Bii outlined ambitious plans aimed at positioning the county as a hub for advanced medical care and services.

Dr. Bii highlighted the ongoing upgrades to health facilities as a cornerstone of this initiative. With Eldoret set to gain city status, the governor envisions the region becoming a focal point for cutting-edge medical advancements.

“Our goal is to make Uasin Gishu a premier medical tourism destination by enhancing our healthcare infrastructure and services,” Dr. Bii stated.

One notable achievement under the county’s health sector is the presence of an aflatoxin laboratory at the Uasin Gishu County Hospital, making it the only facility of its kind in the North Rift region. Dr. Bii praised the hospital’s staff for their resilience and dedication amid challenges, including strikes and human resource issues, which have not deterred their commitment to improving healthcare delivery.

Emphasizing a commitment to transparent governance, Governor Bii stressed the importance of engaging with the community to understand their healthcare needs.

“We must remain connected with the people we serve and be transparent in our efforts to meet their healthcare demands,” he said.

In addition to infrastructural upgrades, Governor Bii announced plans to collaborate with educational institutions to revitalize internship programs and provide attachment opportunities for students. This initiative aims to address gaps in the healthcare workforce and ensure a steady supply of skilled professionals.

Dr. Bii also revealed a partnership with Ampath to establish revolving fund pharmacies. This program aims to provide affordable medications for patients facing challenges accessing essential drugs.

“By creating these pharmacies, we have improved the consistency of drug supplies, which is crucial for meeting healthcare demands,” Dr. Bii explained.

Health Services County Executive Dr. Abraham Serem addressed the county’s efforts to combat Hepatitis A, including the procurement of testing kits and the implementation of comprehensive health screenings in affected areas.

“We are actively working to manage and contain Hepatitis A through proactive health measures across our facilities and schools,” Dr. Serem said.

Dr. Serem also acknowledged that prolonged rainfall has exacerbated sanitation issues, contributing to the spread of diseases. In response, the county is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and MTRH to tackle these root causes and improve overall health outcomes.

Joining Dr. Bii and Dr. Serem at the press briefing were Chief Officers Dr. Joyce Sang (Clinical Services), Dr. Paul Wangwe (Promotive and Preventive Health), Directors Dr. Evans Kiprotich (Health Services), Dr. Sarah Kipkulei (Administration and Planning), and Silah Terigin (Governor’s Press).
