In a powerful statement today, Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), condemned the disturbing reports of hired goons attempting to disrupt the peaceful demonstrations held across the country.

These protests, driven by young Kenyans advocating for meaningful change, were marred by incidents of violence and intimidation, which Odhiambo denounced as a grave injustice against the nation’s civic rights.

Odhiambo expressed deep concern over the alarming trend of politically radicalized groups engaging in criminal activities to stifle peaceful civic expressions. “We condemn the mushrooming of politically radicalized groups that seek to undermine the exercise and enjoyment of civic duties and rights by the young people of Kenya,” she stated.

The LSK President also highlighted Kenya’s troubled history of political, socioethnic, and economic polarization, which has led to significant national conflicts. “The apparent acquiescence of the Nation Police Service Official (NPS) to allow perpetrators of violence to terrorize innocent Kenyans is unacceptable,” she declared.

Odhiambo urged the police to uphold the rule of law, emphasizing that any form of complicity in political violence only serves to drag the country back into dark times.

In her statement, Odhiambo reaffirmed the commitment of Kenyans to seek true and sustainable change. She criticized the recent divisive actions and rhetoric from the political elite, which she believes undermine national unity and threaten the progress of the nation. “The government must protect national cohesion and work towards a united and inclusive future for all Kenyans,” she asserted.

Odhiambo’s remarks underscore a call for a collective effort towards rebuilding the nation through unity and respect for democratic rights. As Kenya faces these challenges, the LSK stands firm in its advocacy for justice and the protection of civil liberties.

The Law Society of Kenya calls on all citizens, including the political leadership and law enforcement agencies, to foster an environment of peace and mutual respect as the nation navigates these turbulent times.
