Kenya’s Women in Power: Dorcas Agik Oduor Nominated as Attorney General
In a significant development for gender representation in Kenya’s government, the Chairperson of Kenya Women Parliamentarians and Kajiado Women Representative, Hon. Leah Sankaire, has publicly congratulated Dorcas Agik Oduor on her nomination for Attorney General. President William Ruto’s nomination of Oduor, who currently serves as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, marks a pivotal moment for women’s leadership in Kenya.
Oduor, an accomplished advocate of the High Court of Kenya, boasts an impressive educational background including a Master of Arts in International Conflict Management and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
This nomination follows a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Ruto, in which Rebecca Miano was reassigned to the Tourism ministry after being initially selected for the Attorney General position. Should Oduor pass the National Assembly Committee on Appointments’ vetting process and be appointed, she will succeed Justin Muturi, who has been nominated for Public Service Cabinet Secretary.
As Attorney General, Oduor will serve as the principal legal adviser to the Government of Kenya, represent the national government in court, and handle other legal matters as designated by Parliament or the President. Her confirmation will also see her joining President Ruto’s reconstituted Cabinet, which includes at least four members from the Opposition party, ODM.
In her statement, Sankaire celebrated the nomination, emphasizing, “This underscores the power and ability of women to lead. Women of Kenya will no longer be confined nor belittled but are now breaking the glass ceiling to achieve marvelous feats. We are immensely proud of our daughter Dorcas Agik Oduor, the Attorney General nominee, who is more than capable for the task ahead.”
