In a surprising development within Kenyan politics, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has reaffirmed its position in the opposition despite recent indications of closer ties with the government. This clarification comes amid growing rifts within the Azimio coalition following ODM’s strategic shift.

Junet Mohammed, the national assembly minority whip, underscored the party’s stance while attending a burial in Samburu West. Mohammed emphasized that ODM’s participation in government initiatives was purely aimed at stabilizing the country, which had been experiencing turmoil due to anti-government protests.

“We cannot stand by as our country falters,” Mohammed stated. He reiterated that ODM’s commitment to its opposition role remains unchanged. “Even if our members join the government, we will hold them accountable if they fail to deliver. ODM is dedicated to fighting for the people,” he added.

In contrast, East Africa MP Suleiman Shabal lauded the president’s efforts to foster unity among political factions. Shabal highlighted that in times of crisis, national unity is essential for peace and prosperity. “We thank the president for his commitment to bringing together various parties to stabilize the country,” Shabal remarked.

The ongoing political dynamics within the ODM and the broader Azimio coalition reflect the complexities of Kenyan politics as parties navigate alliances and opposition roles in a rapidly evolving landscape.
