Safaricom has today announced the week four winners in the ongoing Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa campaign. The five are Erickson Imbwaka from Bulbul, Jackline Nolari from Nanyuki, Jared Nganyi from Khwisero, Betty Chebet from Kuresoi North and Timothy Mulei from Likoni Ferry, Mombasa.

The five won KES 1 million each and an additional KES 250,000 courtesy of the Safaricom Foundation to support any community initiative of their choice.

Speaking during the award ceremony in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, 22-year-old Jackline Sintaroi, a street vendor from Iripolei who is yet to come to terms after being announced one of the lucky winners, said, “At first, I didn’t believe it when I received a call from Safaricom informing me that I had won KES 1 million. I thought it was a scam. I have three kids who are in school, so I will use some of the money to pay for their school fees. With the rest, I will open a new sustainable business and maybe build a few rental properties to support my family. I see a complete transformation in my life and my kids’ lives. I thank Safaricom for coming through and helping to transform the lives of many Kenyans in the country through such campaigns.”

Betty Chebet, a 50-year-old potato farmer and mother of five, was over the moon after receiving the call from Safaricom. She expressed her excitement, stating that the award came at the perfect time, as she was facing many challenges, particularly with paying school fees for her three children.

“This is a big miracle, and I want to extend a big thank you to Safaricom for such a wonderful campaign. I am still in shock as I have been through a lot. I lost my husband in 2009, and since then, I have been struggling to raise my kids. This money will greatly support me in educating them. I will also use some of the funds to start a dairy farm, which I have been passionate about for years. I studied veterinary science but have never secured a job in the field,” said Chebet.

On the other hand, Jared Nganyi, a 70-year-old shopkeeper from Khwisero, Vihiga County, expressed his excitement about winning KES 1 million. This came as a surprise as he would use the funds to boost his business and purchase a piece of land for his sons.

“I run a small kiosk in my village, and the money I have received today will play a big role in supporting and boosting my kiosk business. I will use some of the money to expand it and some to purchase a piece of land for my three sons. With the extra KES 250,000, I will support my community by equipping the JSS laboratory at Luanda AC Primary School. This has been a major challenge for the school, as most students here have struggled to access a properly equipped laboratory,” Nganyi said.

For 25-year-old Timothy Mulei, a fruit and vegetable vendor at Likoni Ferry in Mombasa County, the KES 1 million is a gift that came at the perfect time, coinciding with the birth of his second child.

“I have come to believe that God works in miraculous ways. This is the best gift I have ever received, as it came just when I just had my second child. At first, I thought it was a scam, so I went to the Safaricom shop near Posta in Mombasa to confirm. I will use some of the money to elevate my business and support my family back home, including paying school fees for my sister, who is currently in Form Four,” said Mulei.

The campaign, which began in early May in a bid to lighten Kenyans’ financial burden, has so far made 20 Kenyans millionaires and seeks to award 11 more, with the grand prize winner walking away with KES 5 million.

“It gives me joy to see lives transformed and happy faces, as we are witnessing here today. At Safaricom, we believe in the spirit of transforming lives and empowering our communities to have a tangible impact on society. We achieve this through our various initiatives and campaigns, such as Shine Kenya Shinda Mamilii Kama Bingwa, among others. We launched this campaign early in May, and since then, we have made 20 millionaires and supported various community projects of their choice to impact their respective communities,” said Peter Ndegwa, Chief Executive Officer, Safaricom PLC.

To participate, customers will need to transact on M-PESA or purchase any Safaricom Bundles. For every KES 200 transacted on M-PESA and any Bundles purchase of KSH 20 and above, customers will earn an entry into the weekly draw.

Qualifying M-PESA transactions include Send Money (P2P), Lipa na M-PESA, any transaction made through the M-PESA app, My Safaricom app, or by dialling *444#, *544# or *334#.
