Government and Support Agencies Address Key Challenges at Rice Schemes across the Western Circuit
A recent visit by the MSEA Busia office and Principal Secretary for MSMEs, Madam Susan Mang’eni, to the Lower Kuja rice scheme, East Kano and lower Nzoia irrigation schemes( Siaya and Bunyala) has highlighted significant challenges faced by local rice farmers and outlined plans for support and development.
The visit aimed to assess the hurdles impacting rice farmers in the region and to develop actionable solutions. Among the critical issues identified were open canals, the absence of subsidized fertilizers, and difficulties in market accessibility.
Representatives from Uwezo Fund and the Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE) were also present, engaging with farmers to raise awareness about their roles in the growth of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). Their involvement underscored a collective effort to support the agricultural sector.
MSEA has committed to facilitating the registration of farmers into associations as a first step toward addressing these challenges. The formation of such associations is seen as a vital strategy for farmers to gain access to government support and resources more effectively.
Additionally, plans for Business Development Services (BDS) training are being developed to further assist farmers in enhancing their productivity and market presence.
By fostering unity among farmers through associations, MSEA aims to improve their bargaining power, advocate for their needs, and ultimately boost their profitability. This visit marks a significant step in addressing the critical needs of the Bunyala Rice Irrigation Scheme and supporting the development of the local agricultural sector.
