State Department for Correctional Services Explores Steel Building Technology and Enhances Staff Financial Literacy
The State Department for Correctional Services is considering a major shift in its approach to facility construction by adopting steel building technology, aimed at addressing ongoing housing challenges. Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco held discussions on Thursday with Safal Buildings representatives to explore potential collaborations that could expedite the construction of durable and flexible buildings for workshops and staff accommodations.
The partnership between the State Department and Safal Buildings has previously resulted in the successful establishment of workshops at Chandaria Lang’ata, Meru, Shimo La Tewa, and Kisumu Women’s Prison. These facilities have provided inmates with valuable skills in baking and tailoring, contributing to their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Dr. Beacco praised the existing collaboration, noting its alignment with the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda, which focuses on modernizing correctional facilities as part of broader reform efforts. She highlighted the importance of incorporating steel-building technology training for both staff and inmates to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program.
“We are open to the idea of incorporating training of staff and inmates on these technologies,” Dr. Beacco stated, emphasizing the need for such skills to support ongoing modernization efforts.
In addition to infrastructure advancements, the State Department is placing a strong emphasis on improving financial literacy among its staff. During a separate meeting with Liberty Group Limited, Dr. Beacco discussed the significant role of mental health in effective service delivery. She identified poor financial management as a primary contributor to mental health issues among staff.
The discussions with Liberty Group Limited focused on enhancing training programs related to financial literacy, property management, and retirement planning. This initiative reflects the department’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges and improving overall staff well-being.
The upcoming Correctional Service Week, scheduled from October 22 to 24, will spotlight these issues under the theme “Mental Health and Wellness for Effective Service Delivery.” Financial management will be among the key topics addressed during the conference.
The State Department’s dual focus on modernizing facilities and supporting staff well-being underscores its commitment to comprehensive reform and improved service delivery within the correctional system.
