Agriculture CS Nominee Andrew Karanja Vows to Tackle Cartels
During the second day of President Ruto’s cabinet vetting, Agriculture CS nominee Andrew Karanja addressed lawmakers at County Hall, tackling concerns about corruption and the influence of cartels within the ministry.
Karanja acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by these cartels but assured that with decisive action, he could restore integrity and ensure the quality of agricultural produce. “I know dealing with cartels is a big issue, but if I’m approved by this committee, I’m giving a notice to cartels. They will be out of business. One of the principles I hold very dear is integrity. I will deal with them,” Karanja stated.
Responding to queries about his approach to preventing scandals like the recent fertilizer controversy involving former CS Mithika Linturi, Karanja emphasized a commitment to transparency in procurement processes. “I will make sure there’s openness and integrity maintained in the procurement of inputs,” he said, addressing concerns from MP Kimani Ichung’wah.
Karanja also addressed rumors regarding his alleged connection with former CS Mithika Linturi, firmly denying any such association. “This took me by surprise! I have never met former CS Mithika Linturi, and I have never been a personal assistant,” Karanja clarified.
Karanja’s promises to combat corruption and maintain transparency reflect his determination to reform the agriculture sector, pending his official appointment.
