MP Njoroge Wainaina’s Fortune Fades Amidst Protests Over Finance Bill

Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina experienced a dramatic shift in fortune on June 25, 2024, as nationwide protests against the controversial Finance Bill left him devastated. What began as a prosperous day ended in tragedy, with two of his supermarkets in Nyeri and Nanyuki reduced to rubble by looters.
In his first public address following the destruction, Wainaina recounted the extent of the damage. “In Nanyuki, they burned my five-storey building, resulting in a loss of property worth Shs500 million,” he said. The MP, who had supported the finance bill, was targeted by protesters who blamed him for the new legislation.
Despite the immense personal and financial loss, Wainaina chose a path of forgiveness rather than retaliation. “I resisted the urge for revenge,” he stated. Instead, he turned to faith, seeking divine intervention to redirect the blessings meant for those who looted his property back to him.
Wainaina has appealed to the Presbyterian clergy to help mediate with the local community and urge those responsible for the destruction to return the stolen items, including fridges, cookers, and washing machines.
The MP’s son, Joseph Wainaina, highlighted the broader impact of the destruction, revealing that 322 people lost their jobs due to the looting. The MP expressed disbelief that the same individuals he had assisted during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic were now showing such ingratitude.
