Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Outlines Ambitious Plan to Boost Kenya’s Tourism Sector
In a key address to the tourism industry stakeholders, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca miano detailed a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming Kenya into a leading global tourist destination. The Minister’s remarks were delivered at an evening gathering with Chairpersons of the Kenya Tourism Federation, Kenya Tourist Guides, and other industry leaders.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of the private sector in driving tourism, the Minister highlighted the significant progress made under previous administrations while committing to build on these achievements. The goal is to increase tourist arrivals to 5 million by 2027, up from 2.086 million, and to boost inbound receipts to 824 billion shillings from the current 352 billion.
The Minister commended the private sector’s efforts in hosting events, marketing campaigns, and policy advocacy, emphasizing the need for improved synergies to enhance the tourist experience. Among the proposed initiatives are biannual roundtable meetings for collaborative problem-solving, development of a new National Tourism Strategy, and enhancement of domestic tourism through affordable travel incentives.
Further commitments include improved data collection mechanisms, coordinated tourism promotion, and bolstering safety and security measures. The Minister also announced plans for joint bidding on international congresses and business events, increased adoption of digital technologies, and initiatives to support youth empowerment and sustainability.
The upcoming UN World Tourism Day on September 27, 2024, will serve as a key event to promote Kenya’s tourism, with various counties invited to bid for hosting the celebration.
The Cabinet Secretary concluded by reaffirming support for the sector’s growth and transformation, expressing optimism that these efforts will elevate Kenya’s status as a premier tourist destination.
