In a significant step towards enhancing maritime safety and supporting the Blue Economy in the Lake Victoria basin, a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lake Victoria Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre was held today. The event, led by Shipping and Maritime Affairs Principal Secretary Geoffrey Kaituko, was graced by President Dr. William Ruto and Deputy President Hon. Rigathi Gachagua.

The ambitious project aims to bolster maritime transportation, improve navigation safety, and provide emergency support across the Lake Victoria basin, which encompasses the five counties of Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay, Migori, and Busia.

The centrepiece of the initiative involves constructing a Regional Maritime Safety Coordination Centre, complemented by decentralized Search and Rescue centres in each of the surrounding counties. Additionally, the project will establish a maritime communications system designed to enhance safety on the lake and develop a Unified Maritime Transport Strategy for East African Community (EAC) countries.

Implemented by Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) and Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL), the project promises to revolutionize maritime operations in the region.

Among the attendees were several elected leaders, including Governors Anyang’ Nyong’o and Gladys Wanga, area Senators, MPs, and MCAs, alongside Principal Secretary Betsy Njagi. The gathering underscored the collaborative effort and political will driving this crucial development.

This milestone marks a significant advancement in maritime safety and regional cooperation, setting a new standard for managing and securing Lake Victoria’s vast resources.
