Busia County Signs Letter of Intent with UN-Habitat to Boost Economic Growth
he County Government of Busia, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Paul Nyongesa Otuoma, has signed a Letter of Intent with UN-Habitat, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at transforming the economy of Busia County through the implementation of sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The agreement follows a meeting between Governor Otuoma and UN-Habitat Sub-Regional Director, Mr. Ishaku Maitumbi, at the Governor’s Lounge, where both parties explored various collaborative opportunities. The partnership will focus on key areas that will benefit Busia County and its neighboring communities, including solid waste management, urban planning, housing, gender mainstreaming, youth empowerment, and the promotion of cross-border trade.
Governor Otuoma expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that it aligns with the county’s vision to improve service delivery and the quality of life for its residents. “This collaboration with UN-Habitat will play a crucial role in addressing the challenges we face as a county, especially in urban planning, waste management, and boosting trade. We are committed to working together to bring meaningful change to Busia County,” he said.
Mr. Maitumbi highlighted that the partnership would foster sustainable development, with a focus on creating an enabling environment for economic growth while addressing social issues. “Our cooperation will aim to enhance service delivery in areas like housing, youth issues, and cross-border trade, which are critical for Busia’s development,” said Maitumbi.
The initiative aims to transform Busia into a regional economic hub, benefiting not only the county’s residents but also communities across the Kenya-Uganda border. This partnership represents a significant step toward achieving long-term sustainable development in the region.
