Kenya Tea Farmers to See Increased Yields This Year
The National Chairman of the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), Mr. Enos Njeru, recently highlighted significant improvements for tea farmers since the reforms initiated in 2021. Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Njeru announced that this year’s tea yield has surpassed expectations, exceeding last year’s figures by over 2 million kilograms. The processed tea reached 319,000 kilograms, up from 267,000 kilograms the previous year.
Addressing concerns from farmers regarding perceived low bonuses, Mr. Njeru stated, “No single factory is comparable to another in terms of bonus payments. The amounts are not low; rather, expectations have been set high.” He emphasized that this year’s favorable weather conditions, including substantial rainfall, contributed to a bountiful harvest, which should enhance bonuses for farmers.
Since assuming leadership of the KTDA in July 2023, Mr. Njeru has prioritized improving tea quality, including ensuring timely fertilizer delivery. Despite challenges posed by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict affecting shipping routes, he assured farmers that fertilizer will arrive promptly.
Mr. Njeru also urged politicians to refrain from politicizing tea industry matters, stressing the importance of unity in supporting farmers’ welfare.
