Kenya Boosts Tourist Security to Attract More Visitors
In a decisive move to enhance safety for tourists, the Kenyan government has announced increased deployment of the Tourist Police Unit (TPU), following a memorandum of understanding signed between the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife and the Ministry of Interior. Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior, Kithure Kindiki, emphasized that with these enhanced security measures, the country aims to increase tourist arrivals from the current 2 million to approximately 5 million by 2027.
“Security and safety of both foreign and local tourists are crucial for the growth of the sector,” Kindiki stated. He outlined that the National Police Service will strengthen the TPU’s presence, while the Ministry of Tourism will provide resources for mobility, specialized training programs tailored to the hospitality industry, and logistical support. The TPU will operate under the command of the Inspector General of Police.
Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, highlighted that revamping the TPU is part of her strategy to ensure that all visitors to Kenya can travel safely without concerns for their security. She urged Kenyans to collaborate with the TPU to help keep tourists safe from potential threats.
“The establishment of the Tourist Police Unit was driven by the need to investigate tourist-related crimes, provide escorts for tourist vehicles, patrol key areas, and protect visitors from harassment,” Miano explained.
Additionally, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently announced plans to enhance security in Lamu County, a popular tourist destination that has faced challenges from terrorism. He assured the public that security agencies are actively monitoring threats and will take strong measures to protect both residents and tourists.
“Our security efforts have already proven effective in preventing attacks in Mombasa and other coastal towns,” Gachagua stated during a local event.
With these initiatives, the Kenyan government is taking significant steps to reassure tourists of their safety, aiming to position Kenya as a secure and attractive destination for international travelers.
