MP Gathoni Wamuchomba Criticizes Impeachment Efforts, Labels Them a “Diversion” from Key National Issues

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba sharply criticized the current attempts of removing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office by a section of legislators.

Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, September 30, 2024, Wamuchomba accused some MPs behind the impeachment motion of using the process for gimmick reasons to divert attention away from the government abysmal failures.

Wamuchomba said that the failure by the government to solve problems facing the country, right from agriculture to business, the church, and the youth, has been their drive towards frustrations across the country.

“This government has failed abnormally, it has failed farmers, it has failed the business community, it has failed the church, and it has failed the young people,” she observed.

She went on to say that the inability of the leadership to solve these problems was what finally led to the recent countrywide protests by the youth.

According to Wamuchomba, the reasons behind his impeachment are not based on any credible grounds.

It was just lame excuses politicians use when they wanted to defray blame from failures of the government: “This whole impeachment is just an attempt to find someone to blame.”

She said the motion for impeachment is less than a political game.

She said the actual issues, like the Privatization Act that is contentious, had not been dealt with.

Wamuchomba claimed the act, hastily sailed through parliament, might plunge the country into chaos, more so with the privatisation of key parastatals, like Adani, KICC, and Kenya Seed.

“The courts have nullified it, but the damage is done,” she explained, adding that it was the hurried manner in which the bill was allowed to sail through that contributed to the increasing dissatisfaction in the country.

Wamuchomba also believed that protests by the youth are bound to persist on the ground, cautioning that the root cause that fueled the demonstrations has not been resolved.

“Somebody is very worried that the Gen Z’s have just gone to the ground and they are coming and they will erupt again because the fundamental issues that were pushing them into the street have not been sorted,” she warned.

Meanwhile, Wamuchomba tore into the impeachment push, questioning why MPs were interested in the removal of one person from office instead of focusing their energy and time on burning issues affecting people in their constituencies.

She accused the MPs who have moved the motion of abandoning their duties and spending time plotting in hotels instead of serving their people.

“Does it mean that our MPs have no other work to do, other than just parading themselves in hotels every night, to go and scheme and plan on how to remove one person?” she asked.

The MP concluded by terming the impeachment effort no more than a political sideshow and urged Kenyans to “open their eyes” to real issues affecting the country.
