Bungoma County Launches Polio Vaccination Drive for 770,000 Children
Nearly 770,000 children under the age of 10 in Bungoma County are set to receive polio vaccinations from October 2 to October 6. The initiative was confirmed by Dr. Caleb Watta, Director of Health and Sanitation for Bungoma County, during a press briefing after a stakeholder training session.
The vaccination campaign aims to prevent polio, a disease that can cause paralysis, particularly in high-risk areas near porous borders. This drive is part of a larger effort targeting nine counties, prompted by recent polio cases identified at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Turkana, as well as in Nairobi and Mbale, Uganda, which borders Bungoma.
Dr. Watta urged residents to bring their children for vaccination, highlighting the crucial role immunization plays in combating the disease. The official launch of the campaign will take place at the Lwakhakha border in Sirisia Sub-County on Wednesday.
Health Promotion Coordinator Perita Barasa also encouraged parents to cooperate with healthcare workers and dispel myths surrounding the vaccine. Alongside Bungoma, the vaccination drive will also cover Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu, Busia, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, and Turkana counties.
