Nominated Senator Hezena Lemaletian has voiced significant concerns regarding the ongoing mining activities in Samburu County, questioning the adequacy of public participation before these operations began. In a formal request to the Standing Committee on Land, Environment and Natural Resources, she called for an inquiry into the local and foreign entities involved in mining within the region.

Senator Lemaletian urged the committee, chaired by Sen. John Methu, to investigate the licensing and compliance of these mining entities with the Mining (Strategic Mineral) Regulations of 2017. She emphasized the need to assess the benefits these operations bring to the local community, including whether landowners impacted by the mining activities have received appropriate compensation.

In a separate request, Senator Lemaletian directed the Senate Committee on Roads, Transportation and Housing to examine the poor state of roads in Samburu County. She demanded a comprehensive report detailing the budget allocations for road construction, repair, and maintenance over the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 financial years.

The senator requested specific details on how funds have been distributed among various road projects, along with updates on expenditures for both new construction and the maintenance of existing roads. Furthermore, she asked the committee, led by Sen. Karungo Thang’wa, to outline the county government’s plans for road maintenance, including inspection frequency and criteria for prioritizing repairs.

Senator Lemaletian also highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability in the use of funds designated for road projects in Samburu County, insisting that the Roads Committee implement measures to ensure these principles are upheld.

The inquiries reflect a growing concern among local leaders regarding the impact of mining and infrastructure conditions on community welfare in Samburu County. The Senate committees are expected to report back with their findings, aiming to address the issues raised by Senator Lemaletian and provide solutions for the residents.
