Tensions Erupt During Uasin Gishu County Hall Public Participation Forum
A public participation forum at the Uasin Gishu County Hall descended into chaos on Friday as hundreds of anti-riot police were deployed to manage a volatile situation sparked by supporters of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Despite numerous residents signing forms to encourage public participation, only a handful were allowed to voice their opinions, leading to frustration among those present. The tension escalated when a group of rowdy youths stormed the venue in support of Gachagua’s ouster, prompting swift police intervention to restore order.
“I signed the impeachment petition, but there’s a lack of interest in the area regarding tribalism,” remarked resident Ngetich. “We should not be forced into someone else’s problems when their focus is solely on their own interests.”
Notably absent from the forum were regional leaders, including Governor Jonathan Bii, further highlighting the contentious atmosphere surrounding the event.
Resident Jane Kimeli expressed her opposition to the proposed impeachment, emphasizing the unity of President Ruto and his deputy. “If they are impeached, they must go together,” she stated, underlining concerns over political stability.
The situation underscores the growing divisions within the county, as residents grapple with political tensions and the implications of potential leadership changes. The forum’s disorganization and the absence of key officials raise questions about the effectiveness of public engagement in addressing local issues.
Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation as discussions around the impeachment unfold.
