Parliament’s Impeachment Motion: A Step Toward Accountability and Unity
In a historic move, members of Parliament have displayed commendable maturity and integrity in handling the impeachment motion against the Deputy President. This significant development, the first under the UDA regime, marks a pivotal moment for constitutionalism and the rule of law in Kenya.
Kipkorir Ngetich, an Eldoret-based human rights activist, expressed pride in the current Parliament’s conduct, stating, “Kenya has returned to the good books of history by defending national security, cohesion, and unity.” He commended the MPs for their commitment to upholding democratic principles, emphasizing that their actions reflect a responsible and independent legislature.
Ngetich also congratulated President William Ruto for his measured silence throughout the impeachment process. “His restraint has elevated his political stature and showcased his vision as a leader,” he noted, suggesting that this approach should set a precedent for future parliamentary proceedings.
The activist pointed out the potential risks posed by the Deputy President’s continued presence in office, highlighting concerns over national safety. He asserted that removing the Deputy President was a necessary step to avert potential crises, framing it not as a punishment for any community but as a patriotic act aimed at preserving the integrity of the nation.
Additionally, Ngetich urged Parliament to consider enacting legislation to facilitate the recall of underperforming members across all levels of government, underscoring the importance of accountability in leadership. He warned against the dangers of tribalism and division, asserting that the Deputy President’s actions had threatened national unity.
He particularly praised MPs from Central Kenya for their courage in standing firm against potential backlash, emphasizing their role in defending the Constitution amid security threats.
As the country awaits the conclusion of this pivotal process, Ngetich called on all Kenyans to remain peaceful and united, looking forward to the appointment of a new Deputy President who will foster unity. He urged the current Deputy President to respect the will of the people, reinforcing the need for leaders to prioritize national interests above personal ambitions.
This event marks a significant chapter in Kenya’s democratic journey, one that emphasizes accountability, unity, and respect for the rule of law.
