Government Unveils Revised Pest Control Products Regulations to Safeguard Farmers and Consumers
In a significant step towards enhancing agricultural safety and integrity, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, accompanied by officials from the ministry and representatives from the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), presented the revised Pest Control Products Regulation 2024 to the Parliamentary Committee on Delegated Legislation on Monday. The committee, chaired by Gichugu MP Hon. Robert Gichimu Githinji, convened to review the regulations aimed at aligning them with established health standards.
This follow-up meeting is a crucial part of the regulatory review process, designed to promote good product practices within the pest control industry. The new regulations are set to protect Kenyan farmers and consumers from unscrupulous traders who may distribute harmful pest control products.
Dr. Karanja emphasized the government’s commitment to public safety and the integrity of the agricultural sector, stating that the revised regulations would play a vital role in ensuring that only safe and effective pest control products are available in the market. The regulations seek to establish a framework that not only safeguards health but also encourages responsible trading practices.
“The health of our farmers and consumers is paramount,” Dr. Karanja stated. “These regulations will help ensure that all pest control products meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy.”
The proposed regulations come amid growing concerns about the impact of hazardous chemicals in agricultural practices and their potential harm to public health and the environment. The government’s proactive approach aims to create a safer agricultural landscape and build trust within the farming community.
The committee’s review marks an essential step towards finalizing the regulations, with discussions expected to continue in the coming weeks. Stakeholders across the agricultural sector are encouraged to engage in the dialogue, ensuring that the regulations effectively address the needs of both farmers and consumers.
As Kenya seeks to bolster its agricultural sector and improve food safety standards, the revised Pest Control Products Regulation 2024 is a pivotal move towards achieving these goals.
