Kenya and India Strengthen Wildlife Conservation Partnership

In a significant move to enhance wildlife conservation efforts, Kenya’s Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, met with a delegation led by Indian High Commissioner to Kenya, Namgya Khampa, to discuss collaboration on various conservation initiatives.

During the meeting, Miano emphasized the shared objectives of Kenya and India in wildlife management and conservation, noting that both nations are signatories to critical Multilateral Environmental Agreements such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). These agreements are vital for fostering deeper partnerships in the realm of wildlife conservation.

Key points of discussion included the International Big Cat Alliance Agreement, aimed at protecting big cat species across their habitats. Both countries recognized the importance of sustainable management of wildlife species to bolster conservation efforts while promoting wildlife tourism.

Miano highlighted the necessity for capacity building in wildlife management, underscoring the importance of equipping local stakeholders with the skills needed to manage and conserve wildlife effectively. Additionally, the conversation touched on the potential for technology transfer to improve wildlife monitoring and conservation practices.

The collaboration between Kenya and India marks a proactive approach to addressing the challenges of wildlife conservation and underscores the commitment of both nations to protect their natural heritage for future generations.
