Turkana Residents Trained on Digital Reporting for Corruption and Violence
In a significant initiative aimed at empowering local communities, residents of Turkana County have undergone training on the use of digital platforms to report cases of corruption, gender-based violence, and misuse of public funds. The training, organized by Transparency International (TI) with support from Oxfam, specifically targeted community leaders, who will disseminate the knowledge to their peers and fellow residents.
Recognizing the challenges faced by Turkana, which is geographically isolated from other counties, the training aims to establish more accessible reporting mechanisms. Oxfam Programme Officer Hillary Ogina emphasized the necessity of embracing digital tools in today’s digital era. “This project utilizes simple tools, including SMS, to facilitate communication and feedback, ensuring that even those in remote areas can stay connected,” Ogina stated.
TI-Kenya Project Officer Linet Mukhula highlighted the importance of their digital tools, such as Uwajibikaji Pamoja and Action for Transparency (A4T), which are designed to enhance access to information and improve the reporting process. “These tools will empower community members to actively participate in governance and hold leaders accountable,” Mukhula explained.
The initiative focuses particularly on the mining and extractive sectors, which are known to face numerous challenges in Turkana. By equipping local leaders with the skills to utilize these digital platforms, the project aims to foster a culture of transparency and accountability within the community.
As Turkana residents embrace these new tools, the hope is to create a more informed and engaged populace that can effectively address issues of corruption and violence in their communities.
