Eldoret Activists Call for Rejection of Proposed Constitutional Amendments

Human rights activists, led by Kipkorir Ngetich, are urging Kenyan citizens and lawmakers to reject a controversial proposal by Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei to extend the terms of Parliament and the presidency to seven years. This amendment, they argue, threatens the democratic principles enshrined in the 2010 Constitution, which was established to dismantle dictatorship and prevent power consolidation.

Ngetich, speaking at a recent press conference, emphasized that the proposal is a direct affront to the sacrifices made by Kenyans in the fight for a democratic government. “Any suggestion to extend the term limits is a clarion call for dictatorship,” he stated, accusing Senator Cherargei of acting in bad faith and under external influences aimed at destabilizing the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The activists claim that there are “dark forces” at play, using the senator as a pawn to undermine the current government and provoke public discontent. They warn that such moves could lead to widespread resentment against the administration, perceived as power-hungry and disconnected from the people’s needs.

Critics have also pointed to Cherargei’s lack of engagement with pressing local issues, particularly in the tea farming sector, suggesting that his focus on term extension is self-serving. “His constituents deserve a senator who prioritizes their welfare over personal ambitions,” Ngetich added, describing the senator as a “dealer in deceit.”

The group is calling on both the National Assembly and the Senate to safeguard the rights and freedoms granted by the 2010 Constitution. They urge Kenyans to be vigilant against any attempts to manipulate democratic processes for selfish interests.

As the debate over this proposal heats up, the activists hope to rally public opinion against what they see as a dangerous infringement on democracy.
