Kindiki Sworn in as Kenya’s Deputy President Amid Legal Challenges
In a significant political development, Kithure Kindiki was sworn in as Kenya’s Deputy President on Friday, following the lifting of legal restrictions that had previously delayed his inauguration. This event took place after a tumultuous period marked by legal disputes instigated by his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, who was removed from office by the Senate on October 18 over allegations of constitutional violations and inciting ethnic hatred—claims he denies.
EAK Secretary General Kepha Nyandega addressed the audience during the swearing-in ceremony, emphasizing the need for altruistic leadership and unity for progress. “Kenyans are yearning for altruistic service and attention to their felt needs,” he stated. Nyandega urged Kindiki to uphold ideals of selflessness and servant leadership, reminding him of the importance of faithfulness in his new role.
President William Ruto, who nominated Kindiki, praised him as a “dedicated professional” and a patriot committed to national unity and inclusivity. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by diplomats, thousands of guests, and prominent political figures, and Friday was declared a public holiday in honor of the occasion.
The High Court had previously suspended Kindiki’s inauguration due to over 30 court applications from Gachagua and his allies aimed at contesting his removal. However, judges ruled that the deputy president’s position could not remain vacant, clearing the way for Kindiki’s ascension.
Kindiki, who was a key contender for Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 elections and served as Interior Cabinet Secretary, is expected to bring his experience and commitment to the high office as he embarks on this new chapter in his political career.
