University of Eldoret Hosts ICCCER 2024 Conference on Climate Change
*Eldoret, Kenya – November 1, 2024* – The University of Eldoret (UoE) hosted the ICCCER 2024 conference from October 31 to November 1, 2024, bringing together climate change experts, researchers, and stakeholders from various institutions across the North Rift region and beyond. The event, which focused on the theme “Rethinking Our Ecosystems,” provided a platform for dialogue and collaboration on pressing climate challenges facing the region.
During a courtesy call to UoE’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot, the ICCCER Organizing Committee highlighted the importance of the conference in fostering knowledge exchange and building partnerships. Prof. Cheruiyot welcomed the gathering, emphasizing that the conference’s theme aligns with the University’s mission and the objectives of its Centre for Excellence in Climate Change and Green Economy.
“This conference is a timely opportunity for our faculty and students to engage with experts from various institutions working on climate change issues in the North Rift. The theme ‘Rethinking Our Ecosystems’ is central to our goals at the Centre, and we are proud of the wealth of expertise available here at UoE in Environmental Science and Natural Resource Management,” said Prof. Cheruiyot.
Dr. Selly Kimosop, Chairperson of SCOPE Intervention and the lead of the organizing committee, expressed her appreciation for the University’s efforts in coordinating and hosting the conference. She underscored the importance of the conference in advancing climate change initiatives, particularly in the Rift Valley, with a vision to extend its impact across Kenya and Africa.
“Our focus is to restore landscapes in the Rift Valley, and this conference serves as a rallying point for the broader climate change agenda. By starting with the North Rift, we hope to spark a nationwide and continental movement towards ecosystem restoration and sustainable environmental practices,” Dr. Kimosop stated.
The conference featured a wide range of stakeholders from government, academia, and civil society organizations, all coming together to address the growing concerns of climate change and environmental degradation. Participants discussed innovative solutions for ecosystem restoration, land management, and climate resilience in the region, with a particular focus on agriculture, water resources, and biodiversity conservation.
The Organizing Committee included several prominent figures in the climate and environmental sectors, such as Salvadore Correddu, CEO of the Amb. Bitok Foundation; Sylvia Buleti, Crop Protection Agronomist and Food Security Champion at CIFOR-ICRAF; Marcus Steiner and Dickson Njunge from Mali Asili; Kenfrey Kipchumba of SCOPE Intervention; John Kiongo from Laikipia Wildlife Forum; Stephen Bundotich of the Community Socio-Environmental Organization; and David Chemweno from Save Kenya Water Towers.
On the University of Eldoret side, the delegation was led by Prof. Philip Raburu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Planning, Research, and Extension (PRE), along with Prof. Lizzie Mwamburi, Director of Research and Innovation, Dr. Frank Masese, Ag. Director of Industrial Links, Partnerships, and Collaboration, and Dr. Chris Saina, Coordinator of the Centre of Excellence for Climate Change and Green Economy.
The event marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to address climate change challenges in Kenya and the broader African context, with the University of Eldoret playing a central role in these vital conversations.
