IGAD Hosts Climate Change and Health Nexus Workshop in Nairobi
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) recently convened the *Climate Change and Health Nexus Workshop* in Nairobi, bringing together experts and delegates from across Africa to address the critical intersection of climate change and public health. The event was officially opened by Dr. Fatuma Adan, IGAD’s Head of Mission to Kenya, on behalf of H.E. Dr. Workneh, underscoring the organization’s ongoing commitment to tackling regional challenges, particularly the impact of climate change on health.
Dr. Adan highlighted that the workshop aligns with IGAD’s core mandate to address regional issues such as drought, which disproportionately affects vulnerable communities. “In line with IGAD’s founding mission to address critical regional challenges like drought, we are here today to explore practical strategies that will strengthen health systems and safeguard vulnerable populations from the far-reaching impacts of climate change,” she said.
The workshop aims to foster collaboration between governments, healthcare professionals, and international partners to build resilient health systems that can withstand the growing threat of climate change. Key topics included the integration of climate adaptation strategies into health planning, the development of early warning systems for climate-related health crises, and improving access to health services in the most affected regions.
Participants from a wide range of sectors discussed innovative solutions and shared experiences on building sustainable, long-term impacts that can help protect communities from the health consequences of climate change. The gathering further emphasized the importance of cross-border collaboration and knowledge sharing to ensure that climate change does not undermine public health gains across the continent.
Dr. Adan concluded by reiterating the critical role of partnerships in achieving meaningful progress. “Together with our partners, we are laying the groundwork for a resilient future, where both the environment and the health of African communities are safeguarded for generations to come.”
The workshop serves as a step forward in IGAD’s mission to enhance regional cooperation and build adaptive capacities that can protect Africa’s most vulnerable populations from the cascading effects of climate change.
