In a heartfelt public statement today, Senate Deputy Speaker Kathurine Murungi issued a formal apology to the residents of South Imenti and the larger Imenti, Tigania, and Igembe regions for her role in the endorsement of former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi during the 2022 general elections. The apology, which came after months of reflection, was addressed to the 19,568 voters in South Imenti and others across the three constituencies who had been persuaded to support Linturi’s gubernatorial bid.

Murungi acknowledged the significant impact of her endorsement, which she believes ultimately contributed to Linturi’s loss in the race for Governor, noting that the 19,000 votes garnered for the candidate had been insufficient to secure the coveted seat. In her statement, Murungi expressed regret over the outcome and emphasized that the voters’ trust in her had been misplaced.

“I want to convey my many, many apologies to the 19,568 voters from South Imenti Constituency, and to many others in Imenti, Tigania, and Igembe who I convinced to vote for Mithika Linturi in the 2022 elections,” Murungi said. “I now understand that those 19,000 votes were too little, and this ultimately contributed to his loss of the Governor’s position. This was a serious miscalculation, and I take full responsibility for it. I will ensure that such a mistake is never repeated again.”

The Deputy Speaker went on to extend her gratitude to the voters for their continued trust and expressed hope that they would forgive her for what she termed a lapse in judgment. “To those who supported our cause during the elections, I want to say, *Kila la heri kaka*, meaning I wish you all the very best. I am committed to better serving you in the future with the wisdom gained from this experience.”

Murungi’s apology marks a rare moment of public contrition in Kenya’s political arena, where political endorsements often carry great weight. Political analysts have noted that the move is likely aimed at mending ties with key constituencies in the region ahead of future elections, as well as reaffirming her commitment to the interests of her constituents.

Her statement today also serves as a reminder of the sometimes unpredictable nature of Kenyan politics, where endorsements and allegiances can shape electoral outcomes in unexpected ways. Murungi, who has represented the region with distinction, is now looking to move forward with renewed focus and dedication to the service of her people.
