Uasin Gishu County Government Moves Closer to Implementing Gender and Development Policy
The Uasin Gishu County Government is on the verge of finalizing its groundbreaking policy, “The Uasin Gishu Policy on Gender and Development,” which aims to integrate gender considerations into all aspects of county governance. The policy seeks to foster equity and equality in development planning, budgeting, and the implementation of government programs, ensuring that both men and women, boys and girls, have access to equal opportunities.
Uasin Gishu Governor, H.E. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, emphasized the administration’s commitment to achieving gender parity. Speaking on the initiative, Governor Bii stated, “My administration is committed to ensuring equal access to opportunities by both genders. That is the easiest route to economic development and prosperity. Discrimination against a particular gender breeds inequality and inequity—the root cause of economic regression and backwardness.”
The policy, once finalized, will outline clear strategies and approaches to mainstream gender in government operations, creating a fairer and more just society. The Governor believes that achieving gender equality is essential not only for social justice but also for sustainable economic growth.
Mrs. Eunice Suter, the Chief Officer for Gender, Culture, and Social Protection, underscored the significance of the policy framework in addressing the diverse needs of all citizens, regardless of sex. “Once in force, the gender policy will ensure all development is gender-sensitive, and that programs are implemented in a gender-conscious manner,” she explained. Mrs. Suter also expressed her appreciation for the role of development partners and called for stronger collaboration among state agencies and non-governmental organizations to promote gender equality across both the public and private sectors.
In support of the policy, Hon. Patrick Kimaiyo Kimeli, the Chairperson of the County Assembly’s Committee on Gender, pledged to accelerate the policy’s approval process at the committee level. He also promised to lobby fellow members of the County Assembly to ensure its passage once it is tabled for discussion. In his remarks, Hon. Kimaiyo also drew attention to the increasing cases of violence against both genders in society and suggested that local administrators be trained and equipped to handle such issues effectively.
The policy’s implementation is expected to be a game-changer for Uasin Gishu County, providing a comprehensive and inclusive framework to ensure gender equality and fairness in all facets of governance and development. The administration’s efforts are poised to set a positive example for other counties across the country, advancing the fight for gender equity and empowerment in Kenya.
