Uasin Gishu County Governor, Jonathan Bii, today joined his counterpart Governor Wisley Rotich to flag off the highly anticipated 3rd edition of the Iten International Marathon. The event, which saw hundreds of athletes gather in the high-altitude town known as the “Home of Champions,” featured the theme “Run for Climate Resilience,” emphasizing the importance of climate action and environmental awareness.

Governor Bii, addressing the participants and spectators, lauded the event as a key milestone in the North Rift’s journey toward becoming a global athletics hub. “Sports have always been a unifying force for our people, and today, we run not only for personal achievement but for a greater purpose – to raise awareness about the critical need for climate resilience,” Governor Bii stated.

The marathon is part of the ongoing efforts by the North Rift Economic Bloc, which includes Uasin Gishu County, to utilize sports as a platform for addressing socio-economic and environmental challenges. Governor Bii expressed his commitment to supporting initiatives that drive both economic growth and sustainable practices in the region.

“With Iten being globally recognized as a training ground for some of the world’s best runners, this marathon is not just an athletic contest; it’s an opportunity to spotlight climate resilience,” Bii added, emphasizing the link between environmental stewardship and the region’s future.

Participants, including elite athletes and recreational runners, took to the challenging course that winds through the beautiful, rugged terrain of Iten. The event provided a unique opportunity for athletes and local residents to come together in solidarity, advocating for a sustainable future while celebrating the region’s rich sporting culture.

Governor Bii also acknowledged the local community’s role in the success of the marathon. “The growth of this event is a direct reflection of the support from our people, our athletes, and our partners. It’s through their dedication that Uasin Gishu continues to be a beacon of athletics in Kenya and beyond,” he concluded.

As the race unfolded, it was clear that the Iten International Marathon is not just an athletic event but a call to action for addressing climate change, fostering resilience, and promoting the North Rift as a leading destination for sustainable tourism and world-class athletics.
