Eldoret National Polytechnic Students Urged to Report Gender-Based Violence Cases
As Kenya observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Eldoret National Polytechnic has renewed its commitment to tackling gender-based violence within the institution. The polytechnic’s Student Chairman, Elijah Shollei, called on all students to report any incidents of GBV to the relevant authorities, urging them to take a stand against violence and discrimination.
Shollei emphasized that students should approach designated student leaders, including the women’s and men’s representatives, if they encounter or witness any form of GBV. In cases that require more comprehensive intervention, Shollei highlighted the polytechnic’s constitution, which directs such matters to be escalated to higher institutional offices.
“For any GBV case that requires further guidance, it should be referred to the guidance and counseling office, as well as the office of the Deputy Dean who handles gender-related issues. This is the highest office where GBV cases can be properly addressed,” Shollei said.
The Student Chairman strongly warned against any participation in GBV, stressing that the school authorities are vigilant and will act swiftly to protect students’ rights. “Any case of GBV that goes beyond the institution’s ability to resolve will be forwarded to a court of law, where it will be addressed in accordance with the country’s constitution,” he added.
Shollei further encouraged students to overcome any hesitation and report GBV cases, highlighting that reporting is essential to understanding the extent of the issue and finding effective solutions. He assured students that support is readily available, mentioning the presence of peer counselors in various classes and departments.
“We have peer counselors in our various classes and departments. I encourage students who are affected to come forward. You will be helped, and together we will find a solution,” Shollei said.
The 16 Days of Activism campaign is an annual global initiative aimed at raising awareness and combating all forms of gender-based violence. At Eldoret National Polytechnic, the focus on creating a safe and supportive environment for all students continues to be a priority as the institution stands firm in its commitment to tackling GBV.
