The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) Board of Directors has come out strongly in support of CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, MBS, following a weekend of online misinformation regarding the organization’s governance and management.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Board, which represents over 16,000 members across Kenya, expressed its full backing for Dr. Mutua and his leadership since he assumed the role two years ago. The Board lauded his efforts in steering MCSK through significant changes, enhancing the visibility of the Kenyan music industry, and advocating for artists’ rights both locally and internationally.

“The Board is extremely satisfied with the work Dr. Ezekiel Mutua has done in his time as CEO,” said Dr. Lazarus Muli, Chairman of the MCSK Board. “His dedication, enthusiasm, and strategic direction have transformed MCSK and have brought much-needed attention to the music sector in Kenya.”

The statement also addressed a series of false claims that were recently spread on social media, which criticized Dr. Mutua’s leadership. According to the Board, these attacks originated from individuals who falsely claimed to be MCSK directors, and were involved in halting the society’s planned elections. The Board clarified that these individuals had filed fraudulent documents with the Registrar of Companies and were implicated in illegal activities related to the misappropriation of funds.

The MCSK Board is currently pursuing legal action against those behind the malicious attacks, including a group of individuals accused of collaborating with cartels to misappropriate funds collected through the Private Copying Remuneration (Blank Tape Levy). These cartels are also allegedly behind efforts to introduce a corrupt licensing system that would harm the interests of musicians.

“The false and defamatory statements circulating on social media are part of a broader agenda by criminal elements seeking to exploit the music industry,” Dr. Muli added. “The Board fully supports Dr. Mutua in taking legal action to protect his reputation and the integrity of MCSK.”

In addition to the legal measures, the MCSK Board announced that disciplinary action will be taken against any members involved in these unlawful activities, with the matter to be discussed at the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The Board also confirmed that MCSK’s national elections will take place in the next two weeks, with the office of the Registrar of Companies and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) overseeing the process to ensure transparency and fairness.

“The upcoming elections will be conducted in strict adherence to the MCSK Memorandum and Articles of Association,” the Board’s statement concluded, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the organization’s governance standards.

Dr. Mutua’s leadership has been credited with revitalizing the music sector in Kenya, and the MCSK Board has expressed confidence in his continued success as CEO.
