Kimilili MP Urges President Ruto to Stay Focused on Legacy Projects Despite Opposition
Kimilili Member of Parliament, Didmus Barasa, has called on President William Samoei Ruto to maintain his resolve in delivering transformative projects for Kenya, despite facing significant opposition from civil society groups. In a statement released earlier today, Barasa emphasized that while public-private partnerships (PPPs) are often met with resistance, they are essential for the nation’s long-term growth.
“The opinion of a few civil society groups should not be allowed to derail the development agenda for Kenya,” Barasa said, referencing the strong resistance to major infrastructure projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the Thika Superhighway. He noted that while these projects faced opposition in the past, they are now integral to the country’s development and economic progress.
Barasa particularly highlighted the importance of PPPs in addressing critical infrastructure gaps, such as the frequent power blackouts in his constituency, Bungoma. The MP stated that the dilapidated transmission lines and outdated power accessories in the region require substantial investment, which can only be realized through effective partnerships between the government and the private sector.
“We need to realize that development is not just about constructing buildings or roads, but also about changing our mindset as a nation,” he said. “We must prioritize long-term benefits over short-term resistance, and ensure that the voices of the 49 million Kenyans are heard, not just a few vocal individuals who often mobilize social media campaigns and demonstrations.”
Barasa also expressed his belief that the government should not cancel contracts secured through PPPs, stressing that the cancellation of such agreements would hinder progress. He pointed out that transformative projects, like the SGR and Thika Superhighway, were once criticized but are now recognized as key achievements for Kenya’s development.
As the country moves closer to the next general elections, Barasa emphasized that Kenyans will ultimately vote based on the delivery of services and the tangible results of President Ruto’s government. He urged the public to remain focused on the end results of these projects and the legacy they will leave for future generations.
“Let us stay focused on service delivery and the legacy we want to build. Together, we can ensure a brighter future for all Kenyans,” Barasa concluded.
The MP’s call to action comes as Kenya continues to grapple with various development challenges, including power outages, inadequate infrastructure, and the need for substantial investment to meet the demands of a growing population.
