The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Hon. Davis Chirchir, today witnessed the signing of a significant contract between the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Samsung C&T for the development of Phase 1 of Nairobi’s Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and the Traffic Management Centre (TMC). This landmark agreement marks a major step toward modernizing the city’s traffic infrastructure, aimed at easing congestion and improving road safety.

The event was attended by key government officials, including the Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, KURA Director-General Eng. Silas Kinoti, and KURA Director in charge of Urban Roads Planning & Design, Eng. Oginga. The collaboration with Samsung C&T will see the installation of advanced traffic management technologies, enhancing real-time monitoring and control of traffic flow across Nairobi.

Speaking at the event, CS Chirchir emphasized the importance of smart infrastructure in the city’s transport network. “This project is a crucial part of our commitment to modernize Nairobi’s transport system. The Intelligent Transport System and Traffic Management Centre will help us manage traffic more efficiently, reduce congestion, and improve road safety for all users,” he said.

The ITS is expected to integrate advanced technologies such as traffic sensors, CCTV cameras, and communication systems to provide real-time data, enabling authorities to make informed decisions and manage traffic more effectively. The TMC will act as the central hub for monitoring and controlling traffic conditions across the city.

KURA’s Director-General, Eng. Silas Kinoti, noted that the project is aligned with Kenya’s Vision 2030, which seeks to create a modern, integrated, and sustainable transport system. “This partnership with Samsung C&T is a crucial part of our ongoing efforts to upgrade Nairobi’s road infrastructure and tackle the challenges posed by rapid urbanization,” Kinoti said.

Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed within the next few years, with further phases planned to expand the system’s reach to other parts of the city. Once fully operational, the ITS and TMC will play a pivotal role in transforming Nairobi into a smart city, where traffic management is more efficient and sustainable.

The signing of this contract marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s efforts to modernize its transport sector and ensure safer, faster, and more efficient movement of people and goods in Nairobi.
