Tana Water Works Development Agency Benchmarks Athi Water Supply Systems
By Grace Waithaka
The Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA) Board of Directors and Management recently embarked on a benchmarking tour of the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) bulk water supply systems. The tour focused on two major water systems that supply clean water to several counties in Kenya.
Led by TWWDA Board Chairperson, Mr. Teobald Wambugu, and CEO, Eng. Philip Gichuki, the team visited the Karimenu II Dam Bulk Water System. The Karimenu II Dam is currently operating at full capacity, storing an impressive 22.6 billion litres of water, and is spilling over. It supplies 73 million litres of clean water daily to Nairobi, Ruiru, Gatundu, Juja, and Tatu City, providing a crucial water source for these regions.
The TWWDA team was also taken through the Northern Collector Tunnel Bulk Water System. This vital infrastructure provides 140 million litres of clean water every day to over 1.2 million residents in Nairobi, Murang’a, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado counties.
AWWDA was represented by CEO Eng. Joseph Kamau and Director of Infrastructure Development, Eng. Bonnie Nyandwaro, who guided the TWWDA team through these key water systems, sharing valuable insights on their operations and management.
The benchmarking tour aimed to enhance TWWDA’s understanding of large-scale water supply systems, with hopes of improving water provision for the areas under its jurisdiction. This collaborative exchange of knowledge is expected to contribute significantly to future water supply projects managed by TWWDA.
