A mother of a child with disability doesn’t have to face the dilemma of making a choice between following her career prospects, or giving it all up to spend fulltime with their child.“

Majority of caregivers for persons with disabilities are at the productive age of 35 – 45 years. This signals loss of a productive workforce from our economy if no action is taken. The National Council of Persons with Disabilities has taken a great step towards addressing this through a number of programmes including support to severe disabilities through Cash transfer, persons with autism and now the new autism programme in the process of conceptualisation

The Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Hon Florence Bore today launched the first Analytical Monograph on autism and related developmental disabilities in Kenya at the Kenya Institute of Special Education , Nairobi. The Report which provides information on challenges faced by persons with autism and related developmental challenges has also provided recommendation that will inform responsive specialized programme interventions.

It has outlined five major difficulties that persons with autism and related developmental disabilities face, namely: Management and Care, Stigma, financial challenges, societal exclusion and lack of education and transition opportunities. Waziri Bore has urged programme designers to consider these needs as they design the programme.
