Acunet Stadium in Malaba is set to undergo a significant facelift aimed at enhancing the border town’s sports infrastructure to meet both local and international standards. Busia County Government has earmarked Ksh 10 million for the expansion, which will include crucial upgrades to the facility.

Douglas Okiring, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Strategic Partnerships and ICT, disclosed the plans while speaking during the burial service of retired teacher and Teso Council of Elders official Jerome Imutuan in Kidek Village, Amagoro location. He emphasized that the funds would be used to improve the stadium, which currently hosts a variety of sports activities including Sub County, County, and Division Two football matches, as well as friendly games involving local, national, and international teams.

Key improvements will include the construction of a perimeter fence to protect players from the crowd, as well as the building of new stands, including the main and “Russian” stands for fans and officials.

The County’s CECM for Culture and Sports, Paul Olunga Ekwenye, also highlighted that the much-anticipated Governor Dr. Paul Otuoma Soccer Cup will kick off in early December, starting at the sub-county level. The tournament’s overall winner will receive a cash prize of Ksh 500,000, underscoring the county’s commitment to promoting sports at the grassroots level.

In addition to football, Ekwenye revealed that the county government is investing in cultural activities. The Teso North sub-county will host the cultural events in Chelelemuk on December 2, where winners will receive awards. The same day will also feature a beauty pageant and a rap competition, showcasing the region’s diverse talents.

Oscar Ochana, a Malaba Central Ward fan and former Young Brazil Mwari FC star, praised the county government’s initiative, describing the Ksh 10 million allocation as a positive move for the development of local sports. However, he raised concerns over the size of the land currently occupied by the stadium, suggesting that the county government consider acquiring additional land or negotiating with neighboring property owners to allow for further expansion.

The planned upgrades to Acunet Stadium are expected to boost sports in the region, offering better facilities for local athletes and attracting more visitors to the border town.
