For 15 long years, 75-year-old Kongato Koech from Baringo County endured debilitating pain and immobility due to a severe spinal condition that had gradually taken away her ability to walk and led to other serious health complications. Her suffering began in 2013 after a fall while tending to her animals, a moment that marked the start of a painful and difficult journey. Despite her family’s hopes that the pain would eventually subside, her condition continued to deteriorate, leaving her unable to walk and causing her to struggle with basic bodily functions.

However, after years of living in agony, Koech’s story took a dramatic turn in August 2024, when she was referred to Tophill Hospital in Eldoret for an advanced spinal surgery. Under the care of the skilled medical team, led by Dr. Florentius Koech, the operation was a resounding success. Three months after the surgery, Koech’s condition has improved significantly, and she is now able to move her legs, a development that has brought her family hope and relief.

“I don’t know what to say. Before the surgery, I had severe back pain, and I couldn’t move or walk. But now, I am gradually improving,” Koech said, expressing her deep gratitude to the doctors who performed the surgery.

Koech also extended her thanks to the hospital’s management for the excellent care she received, particularly acknowledging Dr. Florentius Koech, the lead surgeon. “I feel much better now, and I believe through physiotherapy, I will be able to walk and continue my work as I used to,” she added.

Koech’s son, Roy Kipsang, shared the family’s joy, recalling the years of suffering that had taken a toll on their hopes. “Our mother suffered for over 15 years, but after the surgery, things have changed for the better. We are happy to see her improving, and we pray that Dr. Koech is blessed with a long life so he can continue helping others in similar situations,” Kipsang said.

Her daughter, Caroline, echoed her brother’s sentiments, noting how the family had lost hope over the years but was now filled with renewed optimism. “We are praying for her full recovery. We are so grateful for the medical team at Tophill Hospital,” she said.

Dr. Florentius Koech, the lead surgeon, explained that when Koech first arrived at Tophill Hospital, she was unable to walk due to a compressed spinal cord. The MRI results revealed tight spinal spikes, causing severe pain and impaired bodily functions, including difficulty passing urine. After undergoing surgery to decompress the affected spinal segments and stabilize her spine with implants, Koech was discharged with instructions to follow up with physiotherapy.

“Today, I am delighted to see her at her first post-surgery review. Both her legs are now moving well, and we are hopeful that in the next couple of weeks, she will be able to walk again,” Dr. Koech said, expressing his satisfaction with her progress.

The story of Kongato Koech’s recovery is not just a medical success but a testament to the power of hope, compassion, and resilience. Her journey, supported by the dedicated team at Tophill Hospital, has inspired her family and the community.
