Aga Khan University Recognized in Global Top 100 for Advancing SDGs
Aga Khan University (AKU) has achieved a prestigious milestone by securing a position in the top 5% of higher education institutions worldwide for its contributions to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, ‘Good Health and Well-Being’. The university has been ranked 55th out of 1,498 institutions globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2024 Impact Rankings, underscoring its significant impact on global health initiatives.
AKU’s recognition stems from its robust efforts across research, education, and health services. Researchers at AKU have notably contributed to SDG 3 through extensive publications, focusing on improving health outcomes and well-being. Between 2017 and 2023, AKU faculty produced over 2,500 publications aligned with SDG 3, reflecting the university’s dedication to addressing critical health challenges.
The integration of Sustainable Development Goals is deeply embedded within AKU’s academic framework. Optional education modules on SDGs are offered across various institutes, including the Institute for Global Health and Development and the Institute for Educational Development. Additionally, SDGs are incorporated into postgraduate curricula at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, reinforcing AKU’s commitment to producing graduates equipped to tackle multidimensional global challenges.
Dr. Salim Virani, Vice Provost of Research at AKU, highlighted the university’s scholarly contributions, noting that nearly 80% of faculty publications in 2022 were aligned with SDGs. He emphasized AKU’s growth in research volume, quality, and impact, positioning it as a leader despite operating in resource-limited environments.
Aligned with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), AKU collaborates closely with Aga Khan Health Services to advance health equity in the regions it serves. This partnership underscores AKU’s commitment to translating research into tangible improvements in health outcomes.
