Amb Nancy Karigithu Monday Thought
This is the thought of Kenya’s Ambassador and Special Envoy for maritime Affairs and blue economy Ambassador Nancy Karigithu.
“Thank you South Africa for this year’s edition of Women’s Month which has once again allowed us to reflect on and honour the determination, resilience, and dedication of womenfolk in your beautiful country, women generally and especially in the continent of Africa. The overarching theme of this year’s edition”
“Accelerating Socio-economic Opportunities for Empowerment of Women” serves to remind us that society’s work is not yet done, that we must keep up with the relentless pursuit of gender equality in the different sectors of the economy, not least the maritime sector where women account for a woeful 2% of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers.
While we have come a long way from when women had to disguise themselves as men to work at sea, the figures show that there is still much more to do. In the meantime, Women continue to shatter traditional gender roles and to prove that the seas belong to everyone. Their ability to overcome obstacles, both on land and at sea, stands as a strong testament to their indomitable spirit and incredible resilience while serving as role models for future generations.
As we approach the end of Women’s Month, let us stand in common resolve to ensure that the oceans remain a space where women’s talents and aspirations can flourish without bounds.”
