AMPATH Launches First Strategic Plan to Guide Future Growth and Impact
AMPATH Kenya has launched its inaugural Strategic Plan, marking a pivotal moment in the organization’s journey toward enhancing healthcare, research, and education in Kenya and beyond. The strategic initiative was introduced this week to align AMPATH’s core mission and vision with its expanding role in improving health services and addressing the needs of diverse communities across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The launch follows a four-day retreat with AMPATH’s Executive Board, where key leaders, project representatives, and partners gathered to review progress and chart a cohesive path forward. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Dr. Philip Kirwa, CEO of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) and Chair of the AMPATH Executive Board, Prof. Tenge Kuremu, Principal of Moi University College of Health Sciences (MU-CHS), Prof. Sylvester Kimaiyo, Executive Director of AMPATH Uzima, and Prof. Winstone Nyandiko, Executive Director of Research at AMPATH.
“AMPATH’s strategic plan is the culmination of years of collaboration, growth, and a shared commitment to improving healthcare. It is a blueprint that will guide us as we expand our reach, scale up our services, and leverage partnerships to enhance health delivery, research, and education across the region,” said Dr. Kirwa.
Founded in 1988 as a medical partnership between Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), Moi University (MU), and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), AMPATH has become a pioneering force in capacity-building for health service delivery, research, and leadership in healthcare. Originally focused on Kenya, the program has grown to include partnerships with countries such as Ghana, Mexico, and Nepal, expanding its impact on global health.
The new strategic plan focuses on leveraging AMPATH’s strengths, including its strong strategic partnerships and collaborations, to become the largest treatment site in Sub-Saharan Africa. The plan also highlights the organization’s commitment to transforming medical education and delivering high-quality healthcare while improving the well-being of individuals in Kenya and beyond.
“Our vision is clear – to continue making a tangible difference in the lives of people in Sub-Saharan Africa, ensuring that healthcare is accessible, effective, and transformative,” said Prof. Kimaiyo.
AMPATH’s focus on collaboration and partnership development is central to its future growth. The organization aims to foster deeper connections with local and international partners to address emerging health challenges, particularly those related to infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and non-communicable diseases.
With a legacy of over three decades of dedication and excellence in healthcare, AMPATH is poised to make an even greater impact in the years ahead. The launch of the strategic plan signals a new chapter in its ongoing mission to improve lives through innovation, research, and compassionate care.
