Arbitration Meeting Held to Resolve Mining Dispute in Siaya County
In a crucial step toward resolving ongoing tensions in Siaya County, the Principal Secretary for Mining, Elijah Mwangi, joined Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, H.E. Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, in an arbitration meeting addressing a dispute between two unlicensed mining companies, Amlight Resources and Eagle Mining Limited.
The meeting, convened under Sections 154 and 155 of the Mining Act 2016, aimed to find a lasting solution to the hostilities stemming from conflicting mineral rights claims. Both companies have been engaged in operations without the necessary licenses, prompting the need for immediate intervention.
During the session, CS Joho ordered the immediate cessation of all mining activities in the disputed area, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal guidelines. He directed both parties to submit all relevant documentation, including licenses, land ownership documents, and consent letters, to facilitate a thorough assessment of the situation.
The Cabinet Secretary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing any criminal activities arising from the dispute, stating that such actions would be dealt with firmly according to the law.
“We remain dedicated to promoting peaceful resolutions in the mining sector,” said Joho. “Our goal is to enhance the mineral value chain for the benefit of the country while ensuring that all stakeholders operate within the legal framework.”
The State Department will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to streamline the mining ecosystem, fostering an environment conducive to the sustainable growth of the sector.
