ATC-Kenya to Establish Digital Community Lab in Kitalale
The American Tower Corporation (ATC) Kenya has partnered with the County Government to set up a Digital Community Lab in Kitalale as an enabler to effective global connectivity through wireless communications.
A delegation from ATC Kenya which paid a courtesy call at H.E. Governor George Natembeya’s office Tuesday morning to seek his nod in the Community Service Responsibility (CSR) initiative affirmed the construction works would begin in less than three weeks time.
ATC Kenya which provides wireless infrastructure including installation of communication masts will establish the Digital Community Centre beside the mast in Kitalale where members of the local community will have access to free internet.
ATC-K Public Affairs Manager Isaac Koome disclosed that communities will have the opportune to access relevant content including educational material, hold online conferencing, work online besides charging their electronic gadgets.
The firm has set up similar facilities in select areas across the country including at Akiriamet in West Pokot County as well as in Kwale, Kitui, Laikipia, Siaya, Narok and Tana River Counties with communities embracing them.
H.E. the Governor gave the initiative a clean bill of health and assured that the County Government will offer necessary support including community trainings through the department of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and an administrator to man the centre.
While welcoming the Digital Community program, Natembeya directed the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Public Service Management and Governance Kichwen Ruto to fast-track policy formulation that will guide implementation of the such initiatives.
Also present during the engagements were the County Secretary Ms Truphosa Amere, Governance Chief Officer Mr. Samy Sichangi and officers from Communications and ICT Units in the the department of PSM & Governance.
