Attempted Phone Theft at Kipkaren Bridge Ends in Suspect’s Death After Mob Justice
Early this morning, a suspected phone thief was killed after an attempt to snatch a phone from a woman near Kipkaren Bridge led to mob justice.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m., when, according to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi, a man attempted to steal a phone from a woman who was passing by.
The woman raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents who quickly intervened, assaulting the suspect in response to the alleged theft. Police arrived at the scene and transported the injured suspect to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Commander Mwanthi confirmed the incident and urged the public to avoid taking justice into their own hands, instead advising residents to report incidents to authorities. “We understand the frustration with crime, but taking matters into one’s own hands can lead to tragic outcomes. It’s essential for the public to work with the police to ensure justice is served properly,” Mwanthi said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities seek to understand the full details surrounding the event. The police have also reiterated the importance of community cooperation in reducing crime, emphasizing lawful measures over mob justice.
