Bird’s Eye Medical has expressed interest of collaborating with the County Government of Busia to increase the Coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccination uptake.

Speaking at the Busia County Referral Hospital during an introductory meeting attended by Busia Deputy Governor, H.E Moses Mulomi and Chief Officer Public Health, Jonathan Ino, the organization’s Chief Operating Officer, Patrick Hastings said their intention is to ensure that the County does not lose the gains made in managing the disease.

“We want to see ways of how we can procreate solutions to some of these challenges using the strength and assets that are already available,” he said.

Hastings added that, “What brings us to Africa and Kenya specifically is that the distribution of vaccines has not been equitable yet it is a global problem. We need to increase the capacity of the existing structures which am really impressed by how Busia has done especially in terms of the vaccination sites”.

H.E Mulomi who doubles up as the Acting Health Executive said Busia County is experiencing numerous challenges ranging from budgetary constraints, equipment, resources, capacity building and personnel.
“We have a very unique situation considering that we are on the border.

The protocols being used by the two countries Kenya and Uganda differ hence affecting efforts towards the management of Covid-19 as evidenced by the long queues of trucks in Busia and Malaba towns,” he said.

The DG further disclosed that vaccine hesitancy remains an issue of concern that needs joint efforts to ensure those eligible are inoculated.

Others present included Directors Dr David Mukabi (UHC) and Dr Melsah Lutomia (Preventive and Promotive services), County Health Administrative Officer Ali Atemba, Coordinator Nursing Services Tito Kwena and Marachi Central Ward MCA Patrick Obuya.

Bird’s Eye Medical has been working on the front lines of the Covid-19 relief effort in the US for the past year and a half.
