The Blue Economy, Water, and Irrigation Committee convened today under the leadership of Chairperson Hon. Kangogo Bowen (Marakwet East) to address several pending matters before the year concludes.

During the session, the Committee adopted the mediated report concerning the Senate Amendments to the Water (Amendment) Bill, 2023, following its recent conclusion by the Mediation Committee. In addition, members reviewed and approved legislative proposals, including Hon. Mary Maingi’s Irrigation (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and Hon. Daniel Manduku’s Water (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

Chairperson Bowen emphasized the urgency of pending assignments, which involve site visits to various projects implemented by the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) under the Committee’s jurisdiction. These visits are critical for assessing progress and ensuring accountability.

The Committee will also engage with stakeholders in response to Requests for Statements on several key projects. These include inquiries by Hon. Rael Kasiwai regarding the Siyoi-Muruny Dam project in West Pokot County, Hon. Mishi Mboko concerning the operationalization of the Liwatoni Fisheries Complex, and Hon. Joseph Namuar about the incomplete projects by the National Water Harvesting and Storage Authority in Turkana.

As the year draws to a close, the Committee aims to finalize its evaluations and enhance the effectiveness of water and irrigation management in the country.
