Boda Boda Riders Back Governor Natembeya as Western Region Patron
Governor George Natembeya has been endorsed as the patron for boda boda SACCOs in Kenya’s Western Region, a move that aims to empower riders and unify the community.
Speaking during the event in Kitale, riders from Trans Nzoia, Vihiga, Busia, Kakamega, and West Pokot counties emphasized the need for support in achieving self-sustainability and addressing the challenges facing the boda boda sector.
“When boda boda riders are empowered, no one can take advantage of us. We need to own our motorbikes, employ ourselves, and improve our livelihoods,” said Peter Simiyu, a representative of the riders.
Governor Natembeya pledged to prioritize boda boda issues at both county and regional levels, advocating for access to financing and training opportunities.
“The unity of boda boda riders is critical not just for their empowerment but for the overall development of the region. I will ensure they have access to NAWIRI funds as SACCOs, enabling them to grow and create sustainable livelihoods,” said Natembeya.
The governor also emphasized the political importance of boda boda riders, describing them as key stakeholders in Kenya’s political landscape.
“When youths have money in their pockets, they cannot be misused by politicians who only remember them during elections by giving them reflector jackets,” he added.
Leaders at the event called for greater cohesion among the Luhya community to strengthen their voice in national politics.
“This time, the Luhya community must unite and vote as one. Whether we win or not, unity is non-negotiable,” said Moses Odhiambo, a youth leader from Busia County.
The riders highlighted the need for collective bargaining through SACCOs, which will make addressing their challenges easier and more structured.
“With a united SACCO, we can negotiate better terms and ensure our welfare is taken care of,” said Boda Boda SACCO chairperson John Wekesa.
As boda boda riders rally behind Governor Natembeya, the focus remains on ensuring they gain financial independence and are equipped to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the region’s economy.
“The boda boda sector has untapped potential, and with proper empowerment, we can change lives and create a ripple effect of growth,” said Natembeya.
