A remarkable turnout of approximately 2,500 residents filled the community center on monday for the highly anticipated bursary distribution event organized by MCA Kimani Wanjohi. The local leadership faced the daunting challenge of limited funding against an overwhelming demand for educational assistance, as families flocked to secure financial support for their children’s schooling.

With an allocation of 4 million Kenyan Shillings, the event aimed to provide vital resources to students from vulnerable backgrounds. Each of the 1,200 selected beneficiaries will receive a minimum of 5,000 Shillings to help cover tuition fees, school supplies, and other educational expenses.

According to the area MCA Wakili Kimani Wanjohi the bursary program is designed to prioritize those in greatest need, including students who have lost both parents, individuals living with disabilities, and those who have faced interruptions in their university education. In a compassionate effort to support their daily lives, recipients will also receive pocket money to assist with essential needs.

MCA Kimani Wanjohi addressed the crowd, emphasizing the transformative power of education. “Investing in our youth is investing in the future of our community,” he said.

“We believe that by supporting our young people today, we are nurturing future doctors, engineers, and leaders who will return to uplift Huruma and beyond.” His commitment to education resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom shared their personal struggles in affording school fees,’

Local resident James Ochieng expressed heartfelt gratitude for the assistance, highlighting the dire circumstances many families face.

“Many parents struggle to provide even a single meal per day,” he shared. “This support will greatly help us send our children to school and ensure they have a chance at a better future.” He also commended the inclusive nature of the program, noting that it extends benefits regardless of tribal or political affiliations, fostering a sense of unity within the community.

Despite the positive impact of the bursary program, the event also highlighted significant frustrations regarding disparities in funding across different areas. While Huruma Ward is entitled to approximately 20 million Shillings, the community has received far less, particularly in contrast to the 141 million allocated to Members of Parliament Janet Sitienei’s office, with only a handful of beneficiaries from neighboring villages.

“This is a clear case of discrimination based on tribalism,” lamented a local leader who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “Kiplombe, Kapsaos, and Huruma are vibrant, cosmopolitan areas that deserve equitable support. It’s disheartening to see so many children in need while funds are misallocated elsewhere.”

The bursary distribution was praised for its transparency and fairness, with many attendees noting that this was one of the most inclusive initiatives they had witnessed in recent years. “This is the most transparent exercise ever, where the needy are genuinely considered,” said local resident Joh Saya. “We are grateful that we have been given this bursary for our children’s education.”

Community members expressed hope that this initiative would pave the way for more substantial support in the future. Many left the event with renewed optimism, feeling that the leadership’s commitment to education could lead to long-lasting change. The gathering also fostered a sense of solidarity among attendees, as families shared stories of resilience and hope, united in their desire for a better future for their children.

MCA Wanjohi reiterated his dedication to advocating for increased funding for education in Huruma Ward. He urged community members to remain engaged and vocal in their quest for equitable resources, emphasizing that a united front would be crucial in addressing the systemic issues of disparity and discrimination.
